Mary Ellen McCormack is the BHA's oldest development, located opposite the beach in South Boston. Mary Ellen McCormack offers 1016 one, two and three bedroom apartments in 22 three-story buildings and 152 row houses. Constructed in the 1930s, Mary Ellen was the first public housing development in New England and it remains one of the largest. Originally called Old Harbor Village, the complex was renamed after the mother of John W. McCormack, former Speaker of the US House of Representatives, who fought for housing and human rights. Rents are calculated at 30% of a resident’s income. Residents have the option of choosing a flat rent as well.
