Construction on the Washington Gardens apartment community began in 1966, making it the second of EHA's properties. Encompassing nearly 5 square blocks, the 198 unit community is the largest of EHA's properties. Contained with-in the community is multiple playgrounds, a community center, a fully licensed Head Start program, the headquarters for the Elkhart County Minority Health Coalition, Elkhart Black Expo, Elkhart Police Department sub-station, and the Progressive Church of God in Christ. With the partnership of these organizations and the efforts of property management, EHA is continuously pursuing a strong sense of community for the residents. In an effort to further the comfort of our residents, EHA recently completed the installation of central air conditioning in all 198 apartments.
