Open: Beaufort Housing Authority Public Housing

The Beaufort Housing Authority (BHA) waiting list for Public Housing apartments is currently open. Applications are being accepted since at least December, 2019, until further notice.

To apply during the opening period, open and print the application online. Scroll down to the bottom of the page, and select the "Download application here" link.

Once the application has been completed it must be either:

  1. Mailed to:
    Beaufort Housing Authority
    Public Housing Application
    Post Office Box 1104
    Beaufort, SC 29901
  2. Hand delivered to the BHA Central Office, located at 1009 Prince St., Beaufort, SC 29902; from 8:30 am until 1:30 am ET, or by appointment.
  3. Hand delivered to the Yemassee Heights Office, located at 21 Castle Hall Rd., Yemassee, SC 29945; from 8:30 am until 1:30 am, or by appointment.
  4. Hand delivered to the Sandalwood Terrace Office, located at 8 Southwood Park Dr., Hilton Head Island, SC 29926; from 8:30 am until 1:30 am, or by appointment.

This waiting list has the following preferences: 

  • Head, spouse or sole member is working or has graduated from an institute of higher learning within the last six ( 6) months or who is attending on a regular basis, has satisfactory performance, and expects to graduate within 6-12 months. An institute of higher learning includes, but is not limited to colleges, universities and adult education.
    • Working families include applicant household whose head, spouse or sole member is age 62 or older or is receiving social security disability benefits, supplemental security income, disability benefits, or any other payment based on the individual inability to work.
  • Head, spouse, or sole member currently live in or work in or have been hired to work in the PHA' s jurisdictional area.
    • Working families include applicant household whose head, spouse or sole member is age 62 or older or is receiving social security disability benefits, supplemental security income, disability benefits, or any other payment based on the individual inability to work.
  • Displaced due to no fault of their own (fire, flood, disaster, condemnation or other governmental action). 
  • Single applicants that are elderly, disabled or displaced over other single applicants.

Closed: Beaufort County, South Carolina Section 8 Voucher

The Beaufort Housing Authority (BHA) Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher waiting list is currently closed. Applications were last accepted from January 13, 2020, until January 20, 2020. There is no notice of when this waiting list will reopen.

To apply during the opening period, applicants were required to complete an application at the Beaufort Housing Authority.

This waiting list had the following preferences:

  • Displaced person(s): Individuals or families displaced by government action or whose dwelling has been extensively damaged or destroyed as a result of a disaster declared or otherwise formally recognized pursuant to Federal Disaster Relief Laws.
  • Residents in the Beaufort Housing Authority Public Housing Program who are required to move and who cannot be placed in another public housing unit.
  • Applicants whose head, spouse or sole member is working or has graduated from an institute of higher learning within the last six (6) months or who is attending on a regular basis , has satisfactory performance, and expects to graduate within 6- 12 months. An institute of higher learning includes but is not limited to colleges, universities, and adult education. 28 Employment must be current and have lasted a minimum of 30 calendar days prior to the time the preference is claimed. The employment must provide a minimum of 20 hours of work per week for the family member claiming the preference. Working families include applicant households whose head, spouse, or sole member is age 62 or older or is receiving social security disability benefits , supplemental security income (SSI) ,or any other payment based on the individual’s inability to work.
  • Applicants whose head, spouse, or sole member currently live in or work in or have been hired to work in Beaufort County. E. All other applicants who do not meet the definitions in the other preference categories.

Selected applicants were placed on the waiting list by random lottery, weighed by order of preferences.
