Open: Hanson Apartments Section 8 Project-Based Voucher

The Kandiyohi County Housing and Redevelopment Authority (KCHRA) Section 8 Project-Based Voucher waiting list for 2-Bedroom apartments at Hanson Apartments is currently open. Applications are being accepted from April 14, 2021 at 8:00 am CT, until 20 applications have been received. 

There are two ways to apply during the opening period:

  1. Call the HRA at (320) 235-8637 x2862 to request an application by mail or email. 
  2. Email the HRA at hra_r@kcmn.us to request an application by mail or email. 

Once the application has been completed, it must be either:

  1. Mailed to the HRA, 2200 NE 23rd Street, Suite 2090, Willmar, MN 56201.
  2. Emailed to hra_r@kcmn.us.
  3. Faxed to (320) 235-7831. 

Preferences have not yet been confirmed.

Selected applicants will be placed on the waiting list by date and time the application is received.

IMPORTANT: This is not the Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher program. Section 8 Project-Based Voucher tenants are required to live in a specific apartment community or scattered site. After one year of occupancy, a Project-Based Voucher tenant may request to be placed on a waiting list to receive the next available Housing Choice Voucher or similar tenant-based rental assistance.

Open: Limited Public Housing

The Kandiyohi County Housing and Redevelopment Authority (HRA) Public Housing waiting list for 2, 3 and 4-Bedrooms apartments is currently open. Pre-applications are being accepted from August 3, 2020 at 8:00 am CT, until the waiting list of each bedroom size reaches 65 applicants.

Please note: According to the HRA, this waiting list is only open for applicants who meet the preferences listed below.

There are two ways to apply during the opening period: 

  • Pick up a pre-application from Lakeview Apartments, located at 300 7th Street NW, Willmar, MN 56201.
  • Call (320) 235-4159 to request a pre-application by email or mail.

Once the pre-application has been completed, it must be returned to the Lakeview Apartments, address mentioned above.

This waiting list has the following preferences:

  • Residency Preference: Applicants whose head, spouse or co-head live or work in Kandiyohi County or attend education and training programs in Kandiyohi County if the education or training program is designed to prepare applicants for the job market will receive a preference equal to one point. A copy of a current lease, statement from a shelter or state photo ID showing an address in Kandiyohi County will be acceptable verification of residency. Acceptable verification of employment will be a current pay stub. Enrollment at an institution of higher learning or training program located in Kandiyohi County will be verified by third-party.
  • Working Families Preference: Families whose head, spouse, co-head or sole member is employed or attending education or training programs will receive a preference equal to one point. Applicants whose head, spouse, co-head or sole member is age 62 or older or is a person with disabilities will also receive the Working Families Preference. Acceptable verification of employment will be a current pay stub. Enrollment at an institution of higher learning or training program will be verified by third-party. Age will be verified by a copy of a state photo ID or birth certificate. Disability will be verified by a current year SSI award letter or letter from knowledgeable professional to verify disability.
  • Veteran’s Preference: An applicant will receive one preference point if the head, spouse or co-head is currently serving in the armed forces or has been honorably discharged from the armed forces. The applicant must verify this by showing a current military ID or by providing a copy of their DD214 form.

It is not known how applicants will be placed on the waiting list.

Closed: McLeod County, Minnesota Section 8 Voucher

The McLeod County Housing and Redevelopment Authority (MCHRA) Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher waiting list is currently closed. It was last open from June 10, 2019, until July 31, 2020. There is no notice of when this waiting list will reopen.

There were four ways to apply during the opening period:

  1. Complete the application at the Kandiyohi County Housing and Redevelopment Authority office.
  2. Pick up an application at the adKandiyohi County Housing and Redevelopment Authority.
  3. Call to request an application by mail.
  4. Send an email to request an application by mail.

Once the application was completed, it must has been mailed to the Kandiyohi County Housing and Redevelopment Authority.

This waiting list had the following preferences: Disabled, Elderly, Live/Work in McLeod County, and Veterans.

Closed: Kandiyohi County, Minnesota Limited Section 8 Voucher

The Kandiyohi County Housing and Redevelopment Authority Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher waiting list is closed.

The KCHRA last accepted applications for this waiting list on a limited basis from April 6, 2022, until August 31, 2022. There is no notice of when this waiting list will reopen.

Please note: The KCHRA public notice states that this waiting list is for "households who meet one or more of the preferences described below...

  • Disabled: an applicant will receive one preference point if they are a family that includes a disabled person. The applicant must provide the HRA a copy of the disabled member’s current Supplemental Security Income (SSI) award letter or a signed statement from a knowledgeable professional stating the household member is disabled.
  • Elderly: an applicant will receive one preference point if the head, spouse, or co-head is 62 years old or older. The applicant must provide the HRA a copy of a State issued photo ID with birth date, official record of birth or current Social Security retirement benefits award letter as proof of age.
  • Resident of Kandiyohi County: an applicant will receive one preference point if at the time of pre-application, the head of household, spouse or co-head lives or works in Kandiyohi County or attends education and training programs in Kandiyohi County if the education or training program is designed to prepare applicants for the job market. The household must provide the HRA a copy of a current lease, statement from a shelter or state issued photo ID showing an address in Kandiyohi County in order to prove the household lives in Kandiyohi County. The household must provide the HRA a current pay stub from an employer located in Kandiyohi County to prove the household works in Kandiyohi County. The household must provide the HRA a copy of proof of enrollment at an institution of higher learning or training program located in Kandiyohi County to show the household attends school or an eligible training program in Kandiyohi County.
  • Veteran: an applicant will receive one preference point if the head, spouse or co-head is currently serving in the armed forces or has been honorably discharged from the armed forces. The applicant must provide the HRA a copy of a current military ID or DD214 form as proof of military service."

There were three ways to apply during the opening period:

  1. Pick up an application from the KCHRA.
  2. Call the KCHRA to request an application by mail or email.
  3. Send an email to the KCHRA to request an application by mail or email.

Once the application was completed, it was either:

  1. Mailed to the KCHRA office.
  2. Dropped off at the KCHRA.
  3. Emailed to the KCHRA.
  4. Faxed to the KCHRA.

The waiting list had the following preferences: Each of the following preferences equal one (1) point:

  • Disabled: An applicant will receive one preference point if they are a family that includes a disabled person. The applicant must verify this by providing proof that a family member receives SSI or by a signed statement from a knowledgeable professional.
  • Elderly: An applicant will receive one preference point if the head, spouse, or co-head is 62 years old or older. The applicant must verify this by providing a copy of a picture ID, official record of birth or proof of Social Security retirement benefits.
  • Resident of Kandiyohi County: An applicant will receive one preference point if at the time of pre-application, they are a family whose head, spouse or co-head live or work in Kandiyohi County or attend education and training programs in Kandiyohi County if the education or training program is designed to prepare applicants for the job market.  A copy of a current lease, statement from a shelter or state photo ID showing an address in Kandiyohi County will be acceptable verification of residency.  Acceptable verification of employment will be a current pay stub.  Enrollment at an institution of higher learning or training program located in Kandiyohi County will be verified by third-party.
  • Veteran: An applicant will receive one preference point if the head, spouse or co-head is currently serving in the armed forces or has been honorably discharged from the armed forces. The applicant must verify this by showing a current military ID or by providing a copy of their DD214 form.  Verification of preference(s) must be submitted with the pre-application in order to be added to the HRA’s waiting list.  

Selected applicants were placed on the waiting list by date and time the application is received, weighed by order of preferences.
