Open: Springfield Housing Authority Public Housing

The Springfield Housing Authority Public Housing waiting list is currently open, since at least January 7, 2019, until further notice. Waiting lists for a specific community or bedroom size may be closed.
 
There are three ways to apply:

  1. Download and print the application online. Scroll down to the section titled "How do I apply for Public Housing?" and select the "Springfield Housing Authority Application" link.
  2. Pick up an application at at 200 N. 11th Street, Springfield, Illinois; Monday-Friday, 8:30 am until 11:30 am; and 1:00 pm until 4:30 pm CT.
  3. Call (217) 753-5757 to request an application by mail.

Once the application has been completed, it must be hand delivered to the SHA at the address above on Mondays and Tuesdays only. Mailed applications will not be accepted.

This waiting list has the following preferences: Local residency; Working family; Elderly; Disabled.

Closed: Sangamon County, Illinois Mainstream Voucher

The Springfield Housing Authority (SHA) Mainstream (Disabled) Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher waiting list is currently closed. It was last open from January until March 5, 2019. There is no notice of when this waiting list will reopen.

Please note: According to the SHA, the Mainstream Voucher Program, "is a rent subsidy program for low and moderate income households WITH a family member(s) who has a disability. This includes those households that are transitioning out of institutional or other segregated setting, or at serious risk of institutionalization, or homeless or at risk of homelessness."

To apply during the opening period, applicants were required to complete an application at the SHA office.

This waiting list had the following preferences: Resident of Sangamon County, IL; Employed in Sangamon County for the past 12 months or resident who is unable to work due to disability; Non-Elderly Disabled household member transitioning out of institutional or other segregated setter, or at serious risk of institutionalization, or homeless or at risk of homelessness.

Selected applicants were placed on the waiting list by date and time the application was received, by order of preferences.

Closed: Sangamon County, Illinois Section 8 Voucher

The Springfield Housing Authority (SHA) last accepted Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher waiting list applications from August 26, 2019, until May 28, 2024. There is no notice of when this waiting list will reopen.

To apply during the opening period, applicants were required to complete an application at the SHA Administrative office.

This waiting list had the following preferences:

  • Local Resident: Residency Preference must be demonstrated by having a permanent physical residence within the jurisdictional area of Sangamon County. Physical residence shall be defined as a domicile with a mailing address, other than a post office box, for which the applicant can produce one or more of the following; a lease or a purchase agreement, utility bills showing the claimed residence address, or two pieces of first class mail addressed to a member of the applicant household at the claimed address.
  • Local Employment: Applicant households in which a member of the household (head, spouse or sole member) is currently employed in Sangamon County for twelve (12) consecutive months or longer. Eligibility for Local Employment Preference must be demonstrated by third party employment verification. Applicants in Sangamon County where the head and spouse, or sole members is age 62 or older, or is a person with disabilities will also be awarded this preference.

It is not known how selected applicants were placed on the waiting list.
