Open: Kankakee County Housing Authority Public Housing

The Kankakee County Housing Authority (KCHA) is accepting Public Housing waiting list applications from the earliest confirmed open date of June 30, 2023, until further notice.

To apply during the opening period, call (815) 939-7125 to request an application.

This waiting list has the following preferences:

  • Working individuals/families who live and/or work in Kankakee County, Illinois.
  • Other individuals/families who live within the jurisdiction of the KCHA (disabled persons to have same preference weight as working individuals).
  • Working individuals/families who live outside the jurisdiction of the KCHA.
  • Other individuals/families who live outside the jurisdiction of the KCHA (disabled persons to have same preference weight as working individuals).

Selected applicants will be placed on the waiting list by date and time the application is received, by order of preferences.

Closed: Kankakee County Housing Authority Section 8 Voucher

The Kankakee County Housing Authority (KCHA) Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher waiting list is currently closed. It was last open for three days in July 2015. There is no notice of when this waiting list will reopen.


Kankakee County, IL is 55 miles south of Chicago, IL.


Please note: According to this news article, hundreds were in line by the morning of the opening, and some were even in line the night beforehand. Police were at the premise to keep peace. At least one fight was officially reported.



To apply, applicants must have visited the KCHA office.


The KCHA identified the following preferences: Working households who live and/or work in Kankakee County, other households who live in Kankakee County, working households who live outside of Kankakee County, other households who live outside of Kankakee County.


Qualified applicants were added onto the waiting list by date and time of the application's submission. There is no limit set by the KCHA of how many applicants will be placed onto the waiting list.
